Underwater Filming Services

Certified underwater cinematography for marine, pool, and aquatic productions across Mexico.

Scroll

Underwater camera operators combine professional diving certification with cinema camera expertise to capture footage beneath the surface. Mexico offers extraordinary underwater environments including the Yucatán cenotes (crystal-clear freshwater sinkholes), Caribbean reefs of Cozumel, and the Pacific coast's marine wildlife, delivering unique subaquatic imagery unavailable anywhere else.

We connect you with certified underwater camera professionals experienced in Mexico's diverse aquatic environments. From the ethereal cenote cave systems to Guadalupe Island's great white shark encounters, our operators know these waters. We coordinate waterproof housing, lighting, safety divers, and logistics so your underwater sequences are captured safely.

On Location

Underwater camera operators across Yucatán cenotes, Sea of Cortez Cousteau heritage, Sian Ka'an UNESCO Biosphere, Fox Baja Studios world's-largest ocean tank, San Ignacio gray whales

Here is how this works in practice. We set up underwater camera ops across Mexico's deepest marine and freshwater filming locations through PADI-certified dive cinematographers running RED Komodo, Sony Venice 2, ARRI Alexa Mini LF in Gates, Nauticam, and SeaCam underwater housings rated to 300m. Plus DPX deep-water rebreather divers for cenote cave systems. The Yucatán Peninsula's freshwater cenotes. The list covers Cenote Ik Kil, Suytun, X'keken, Dos Ojos, Gran Cenote, and Cenote Azul. Represent the world's most cinematic underground river system, the Sistema Sac Actun (longest underwater cave network on Earth, 376km surveyed).

On the ground, Sea of Cortez (Baja Sur, Cabo San Lucas to La Paz) — Cousteau's 'world's aquarium' — anchors sea-life sequences with hammerhead aggregations, mobula ray fever events (May–July), and Cabo Pulmo Marine Park reef coverage. Sian Ka'an UNESCO Biosphere (Quintana Roo) and El Vizcaíno UNESCO Biosphere (Baja) need SEMARNAT site-level permits.

Here is the short of it. Major-production underwater work routes through Fox Baja Studios Rosarito (Estudios Bajamar), home of the world's largest seawater filming tank — the 4.5-million-gallon Horizon Tank where Titanic (1997 — Cameron's Best Picture Oscar), Master and Commander (2003 — Weir), Pearl Harbor (2001 — Bay), and dozens of later tank features were shot. Tank operators carry safety-divers, dry-suit experts, and SCUBA Schools Global credentials. Cancún + Cozumel + Playa del Carmen Mesoamerican Barrier Reef (second-largest barrier reef on Earth after Australia's) delivers coral and shark sequences.

On the ground, Whale work in San Ignacio Lagoon (Baja Sur) covers the gray whale January–March migration window — Eschrichtius robustus mother-calf approach behavior unique on Earth. SEMARNAT and CONANP issue protected-area filming permits; INM handles dive-crew work visas; ATA carnet (SAT/Aduanas) covers housing customs. Mexican underwater operator hubs: Cenote Divers Tulum, Diveritage Cozumel, Eco Colors Cancún, plus UNAM Marine Science Institute scientific partners.

FAQ

Professional Underwater Operations

What certifications do your underwater operators hold?

Our underwater camera operators hold professional PADI, CMAS, or equivalent certifications appropriate for the filming depths and conditions. Many hold specialist underwater cinematography certifications and have HSE or equivalent commercial diving qualifications for complex productions.

What camera systems can you use underwater?

We operate underwater housings for ARRI Alexa Mini, RED Komodo/V-Raptor, Sony Venice/FX6, and Blackmagic cameras. Housing selection depends on your camera package, required features, and depth requirements. We also use specialized underwater cinema cameras.

Can you film with actors underwater?

Yes. We work with trained water safety coordinators and provide actor coaching for underwater work. Non-diving actors can be filmed in controlled shallow water with safety divers. Complex underwater stunts require specialized coordination and safety planning.

What locations in Mexico are suitable for underwater filming?

Mexico offers diverse underwater filming locations: Caribbean (clear water, marine life), Pacific coast (dramatic conditions), cenotes (unique freshwater environments), lakes and rivers (freshwater environments), and numerous studio tanks and pools for controlled shoots.

How do you handle underwater lighting?

We use specialized underwater LED and HMI lights in waterproof housings. For pool and tank work, above-water lighting can penetrate effectively. Deep or murky water requires dedicated underwater lighting packages planned during pre-production.

What are the safety requirements for underwater filming?

All underwater work requires risk assessments, dive plans, certified safety divers, surface support, and emergency protocols. We comply with Mexican diving regulations and film industry safety standards. Complex sequences may require hyperbaric chamber standby.

Productions in Mexico that need this often pair it with Steadicam & Gimbal Operators, Director of Photography Services, and Multi-Camera Shoots for full coverage. Most projects also draw on Underwater Lighting and Camera & Cinematography.
