SCENE 01 / LOOK DEVELOPMENT

Look Development

Creative visual style development and LUT creation for distinctive cinematic aesthetics that define your production's unique identity.

Scroll

Here is how this works in practice. Look development sets up the visual style and color aesthetic of a production before principal photography starts. Through testing with cameras, lenses, lighting, and LUTs, look development creates reference images and tech specs that guide the entire production toward a unified look.

Here is the short of it. We support look development by setting up camera tests, LUT creation, and joint work between your cinematographer and colorist. Our team arranges testing facilities and tech resources to make sure your production's visual look is defined, logged, and ready to guide steady image capture from day one.

Look development and LUT design rooted in Mexican DP heritage — Lubezki naturalism, Prieto heritage saturation, Navarro gothic

Here is how this works in practice. We set up look development through Mexico City color houses where colorists work alongside DPs to set up project-wide look before principal photography wraps. Lemon Studios runs on-set LUT design via DaVinci Resolve Studio with Pomfort LiveGrade integration for camera-side viewing LUTs, then carries the developed look into final-grade sessions on the same Resolve panels. Cinema Maquina and Labodigital handle parallel pipelines for boutique and mid-tier projects.

Here is the layout. On the ground, Look development sessions mostly deliver a project CDL (Color Decision List), camera-specific 3D LUTs in .cube or DaVinci .drx format, on-set tracking LUTs for SmallHD or Atomos viewers, and a graded reference reel for edit dailies. ACES-native workflows make sure looks survive intact when projects move between cameras (ARRI Alexa Mini LF, RED Komodo, Sony VENICE 2 — all common on Mexican shoots) or cross into VFX pipelines at AnimaEstudios or Brainstorm Multimedia.

Here is the short of it. Mexican look-development heritage is deep. Emmanuel Lubezki's naturalistic sun palette — captured across Tree of Life, Birdman, Revenant, and Roma — became a global reference for ready-light cinematography and is built into LUT presets at Lemon Studios. Rodrigo Prieto's saturated heritage palette (Frida, Killers of the Flower Moon, Barbie) and Guillermo Navarro's gothic-baroque palette (Pan's Labyrinth, winner of Best Cinematography Oscar 2007) inform the project library of looks our colorists can reference.

Here is how the work shapes up. On the ground, Del Toro's Shape of Water (Best Picture 2017) and Pinocchio (2022 AnimaEstudios joint work) extended the Mexican-fantastic look language into new visual areas. Look targets follow distribution: DCI-P3 with Dolby Vision pass for Netflix LatAm and Apple TV+ LatAm theatrical-equivalent grades, Rec.709 for Televisa San Ángel and TV Azteca Ajusco broadcast, and DCI-P3 cinema-circuit looks for Festival Internacional de Cine de Morelia (FICM), FICG Guadalajara, and Los Cabos screenings.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

When should we start look development?

Here is the breakdown. Ideally during pre-production. Early look development allows you to use tracking LUTs on set, make sure steady dailies, and align all departments on the visual direction. However, we can also develop looks during post-prod if needed.

What do you need to create a look?

Here is what that looks like on the ground. We work best with sample footage from your camera tests or early production, visual references (films, photographs, artwork), mood boards, and a discussion of your creative goals. The more context we have about your story and vision, the better we can serve your project.

How do LUTs work in production?

Here is how the picture comes together. We create tracking LUTs that can be applied to camera feeds and dailies, giving all on set a preview of the intended look. These tech LUTs are optimized for different display types and viewing conditions while preserving full dynamic range in your RAW footage.

Can you match a specific film or reference look?

Here is what we have to work with. We can analyze and recreate aesthetic qualities from references, though we develop unique interpretations rather than exact copies. Our goal is to know what you respond to in references and create a distinctive look that serves your specific story and footage.

Productions in Mexico that need this often pair it with Color Correction Services, Color Grading Services, and Online Conform & QC Services for full coverage. Most projects also draw on Narrative & Documentary Editing and Foley Recording Services.
