Sound design with Skip Lievsay, Eugene Gearty cross-border heritage and Lemon Studios CDMX as creative hub

Here is how this works in practice. We set up sound design through Mexico City's top creative rooms. This covers Lemon Studios as the flagship for theatrical sound design (Cuarón Roma, Iñárritu Bardo finishing), Estudios Churubusco for body-level projects, and boutique designer studios in Polanco, Roma, and Coyoacán where independent sound designers run Pro Tools Ultimate with full Native Instruments Komplete, Spectrasonics Omnisphere, Soundminer libraries, and curated field-recording archives. Sessions track at 24-bit/96 kHz with provisions for 7.1.4 Atmos object panning into Avid MTRX.

On the ground, For high-stakes design work we set up cross-border with Skip Lievsay (Coen Brothers, Iñárritu collaborator) and Eugene Gearty (Iñárritu's Babel sound designer) — both of whom have shipped Mexican-finished projects through Margarita Mix Glendale and Skywalker Sound Marin County. Mexican sound-design heritage includes site-specific field recording across the country's biome range (Yucatán jungle, Chihuahuan desert, Sonora coast, CDMX urban) handled by independent recordists with Sound Devices MixPre and Sennheiser MKH 8060 rigs.

Here is the short of it. Mexican sound design carries Oscar-tier credits. Cuarón's Roma swept Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing nominations in 2019, building soundscape from CDMX street ambience, 1970s domestic interiors, and the Acapulco coast — much of it captured and edited in Mexico before final mix. Iñárritu's Birdman (2014, Best Picture), Revenant (2015), and Bardo (2022) each leveraged Mexican-LA sound-design pipelines. The Shape of Water (del Toro 2017, Best Picture) ran wide water and creature design through cross-border joint work.

On the ground, we set up similar projects today. With deliverables conformed to sites spec: Netflix LatAm -27 LKFS Atmos, theatrical 5.1/7.1/Atmos for FICM and FICG, broadcast EBU R128 for Televisa San Ángel, TV Azteca Ajusco, Imagen TV, and Multimedios. Domestic distribution to Cinépolis (world's #4 cinema chain, Mexican-owned) and Cinemex follows DCI compliance with Doremi and Sony DCP playback certification.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is sound design and why is it important?

Sound design is the creative process of developing audio elements that don't exist in production recordings - from ambient atmospheres and environmental sounds to fantastical effects and creature voices. Great sound design makes worlds believable, enhances emotion, and creates memorable cinematic moments that audiences feel as much as hear.

Do you create original sounds or use libraries?

We combine both approaches. Our sound designers create original recordings and synthesized sounds for unique elements that define your production, while also utilizing premium sound libraries for efficiency. Every project gets a customized sonic palette that serves its specific creative needs.

Can you design sounds for specific genres like sci-fi or horror?

Absolutely. Our team has extensive experience across all genres including science fiction, horror, fantasy, action, drama, and documentary. We understand the sonic conventions and audience expectations of each genre while bringing fresh creative perspectives to every project.

How do you work with directors and editors?

We collaborate closely throughout the process. We typically begin with spotting sessions to understand your vision, provide works-in-progress for feedback, and refine sounds based on your direction. We can work with picture lock or accommodate editorial changes as your project evolves.

Productions in Mexico that need this often pair it with Foley Recording Services, Dialogue Editing & ADR Services, and 5.1 Surround Mixing Services for full coverage. Most projects also draw on Interview & Dialogue Editing and Color Grading Services.
