SCENE 01 / VIRTUAL PRODUCTION

Virtual Production

LED volume and real-time VFX for your Mexican production.

Scroll

Here is how this works in practice. Virtual production merges physical filmmaking with real-time digital environments, using LED volumes, motion capture, and game engine technology to create in-camera visual effects. This way gives directors and cinematographers immediate visual feedback, reduces post-prod timelines, and enables creative flexibility on set.

Here is the short of it. We connect you with virtual production stages and tech teams equipped to deliver real-time rendered environments for your project. Our team sets up facility booking, content pipeline setup, and on-set tech support to make sure your virtual production workflow operates smoothly from pre-visualization through final capture.

On Location

Virtual production across Mexico — Lemon Studios CDMX Unreal Engine 5 + Disguise xR, AnimaEstudios Toluca emerging pipeline, Tijuana cross-border ILM Stagecraft same-day LA fly-in

Here is how this works in practice. We set up virtual production across Mexico through emerging in-area LED volumes and cross-border LA same-day fly-in for tentpole shoots. Lemon Studios CDMX (Bardo Iñárritu 2022 finishing partner) leads the domestic virtual-production buildout with permanent Disguise xR + Aximmetry deployments running ROE Visual Black Pearl BP2 and Carbon CB5 LED tiles, Mo-Sys StarTracker + Ncam camera-tracking, NVIDIA RTX 6000 Ada workstations, and Unreal Engine 5 + Niagara rendering. AnimaEstudios Toluca (Pinocchio 2022 del Toro Best Animated Feature Oscar) is expanding from stop-motion into hybrid virtual production.

Here is the breakdown. On the ground, Estudios Churubusco (since 1945. Mexico's deepest govt-owned studio with sixteen soundstages) is adapting permanent green-screen capacity to LED Volume retrofits. For tentpole work exceeding domestic capacity, Tijuana cross-border drive (12 minutes to LA) enables same-day fly-in from ILM Stagecraft (Mandalorian/Ahsoka pioneer), Pixomondo LA, MOVE.AI volumetric, MPC, Vu Technologies.

Here is the short of it. Mexico's virtual-production talent pool draws from UNAM (Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México) computer-graphics programs, Tecnológico de Monterrey engineering, Centro de Cultura Digital CDMX, and the AnimaEstudios Toluca art-direction lineage. Mexican auteur adoption: Cuarón's Gravity 2013 (Best Director Oscar — pre-figured virtual-production technique at scale), Iñárritu's Bardo 2022 (hybrid LED + practical sets at Lemon Studios CDMX — the first Mexican-domestic LED Volume tentpole), and del Toro's Pinocchio sequel virtual-pipeline expansion at AnimaEstudios.

Here is what that looks like on the ground. On the ground, Commercial virtual production: Cervecería Modelo + Grupo Modelo (Corona, Pacífico, Victoria), FEMSA Coca-Cola, Bimbo, Cinépolis (world's second-largest cinema chain), Cemex, TelevisaUnivision branded content, Vix LatAm SVOD originals (HQ'd in CDMX), Netflix LatAm Narcos: Mexico universe expansion. F1 Mexico GP digital sponsor backdrops, Liga MX broadcast graphics integration. EFICINE 189/190 federal tax credits eligible for virtual production spend, IMSS workers-comp, STIC + STPC union, ATA carnet (SAT/Aduanas) for LED-tile imports.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is virtual production?

Virtual production uses LED walls displaying real-time rendered environments instead of green screens. The camera sees a finished background on set, allowing immediate creative decisions and in-camera visual effects that interact with lighting.

What are the benefits over green screen?

LED volumes give realistic reflections in eyes and surfaces, accurate interactive lighting on actors, immediate creative feedback, reduced post-prod time, and no green spill or complex keying needs.

What software do you use?

We primarily use Unreal Engine for real-time rendering, along with industry-standard tools for tracking, color science, and asset management. The system integrates with standard cinema cameras and workflows.

Can you create custom environments?

Yes, our virtual art department creates custom 3D environments optimized for LED volume display. These can be photorealistic locations, fantastical worlds, or anything in between—delivered ready for real-time playback.

What about camera tracking?

Camera tracking is key for perspective-correct backgrounds. We use pro tracking systems that sync camera position with virtual environment rendering, keeping parallax and perspective as the camera moves.

Where are LED volumes in Mexico?

Mexico has access to LED volume facilities through partnerships with regional studios. We can advise on the best stage for your needs and set up all tech aspects of virtual production including crew and gear.

Productions in Mexico that need this often pair it with AR Production, LED Wall Virtual Production, and Green Screen Filming for full coverage. Most projects also draw on Camera & Cinematography and Production Services.
