SCENE 01 / POWER DISTRIBUTION SYSTEMS

Power Distribution Systems

Safe, reliable on-set power for film and TV production in Mexico.

Scroll

Power distribution systems safely route electrical current from generators or mains sources to lighting, camera, and production equipment across a set. Professional distro boxes, cable runs, and breaker panels ensure balanced loads, proper grounding, and safe power delivery to every department.

We provide power distribution systems configured for your production's electrical requirements and set layout. Our team coordinates with your gaffer and best boy to ensure the right capacity, cable lengths, and safety equipment are in place for every location on your schedule.

127V/60Hz residential and 220V/60Hz industrial distribution coordinated through CFE tie-in permits

Here is how this works in practice. Mexican production power runs 127V/60Hz residential and 220V/60Hz industrial — distinct from European 230V/50Hz and matching the US grid frequency and Type A/B plug standard, so LA-shipped HMI ballasts, LED drivers, and distro stock need no frequency conversion. We set up Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE) tie-in permits for productions needing direct grid connection at Estudios Churubusco, Lemon Studios, Argos Comunicación, Estudios Tepeyac, Televisa San Ángel, or location residential / industrial mains.

On the ground, Standard distribution stock includes Lex Products 400-amp 5-wire 3-phase Bates feeder, ARRI Bus Bar 60-amp distros, and Mole-Richardson Mexico's heritage Junior 30-amp ribbon tie-in inventory at Cine Equipos and 3 Equipos rental houses. For off-grid Sonora and Chihuahua desert, Yucatán Maya jungle, Durango Western terrain, and remote CDMX-area location exteriors, Aggreko The country, Cummins, and Caterpillar provide super-silent 60-100kVA tow-plant gennies plus 250-500kVA industrial units for high-load HMI-heavy lighting packages. Solar / battery hybrid packages (Aggreko Y-Cube + Mobile Energy Storage Unit) increasingly handle dialogue-sensitive exterior coverage where genny noise would impact production sound.

Here is the short of it. Heritage-location power adds compliance constraints standard distribution practice does not address. INAH (Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia) compliance at Teotihuacán, Chichén Itzá, Palenque, Monte Albán, and protected CDMX centro histórico cathedral interiors prohibits drilled cable anchors and live-stage tie-ins to heritage electrical, needing freestanding distro positioned outside the protected perimeter with sandbag-anchored cable ramps and rubber-footed combo stands. Aztec / Maya pre-Hispanic ruin shoots use low-impact LED packages (ARRI SkyPanel S60, DMG Maxi, Quasar Q-LED) drawing 80-120 amps versus 800-1200 amps for equivalent HMI tungsten setups, dramatically reducing genny footprint.

On the ground, Major productions filmed Mexico. The list covers Spectre Day of the Dead Zócalo, Sicario Sonora desert, Narcos: The country multi-state, Apocalypto Yucatán Maya jungle, Roma CDMX neighborhood blocks, Titanic / Master and Commander / Pearl Harbor at Fox Baja Studios deep-ocean tank (Rosarito Baja California). All needed CFE tie-in permits plus Aggreko The country fleet-genny pre-positioning. Cross-border productions from LA bring their own preferred Movie Lights distro stock via Tijuana 12-minute commercial border crossing under ATA carnet through SAT/Aduanas. PAT testing and RCD protection follow Mexican NOM-001-SEDE electrical safety rules.

FAQ

Power Distribution Expertise

What generator sizes do you provide?

We supply generators from 20kVA to 500kVA including super-silent units for sound-sensitive shoots. Multi-generator setups for larger power requirements. Battery hybrid systems and tow plant units for various location needs.

How do you calculate power requirements?

We perform detailed load calculations based on your lighting package, camera and DIT requirements, video village, and all other electrical needs. We factor in startup loads and provide appropriate headroom for safe, reliable operation.

Can you provide power at historic locations?

Yes, we specialize in powering shoots at Mexico's historic locations including historic estates, churches, and protected sites. We coordinate with venue requirements, provide appropriate cabling without damage, and ensure compliance with preservation guidelines.

Do you handle tie-ins to venue power?

We coordinate tie-ins to venue electrical systems where appropriate, working with licensed Mexican electricians and venue technical staff. We assess available power, arrange temporary connections, and ensure safe disconnection after your shoot.

What about power for remote locations?

For remote exteriors without mains power, we provide complete generator solutions including fuel management, noise mitigation, and multi-day operation. We plan logistics to ensure uninterrupted power throughout your shoot.

How do you ensure electrical safety on set?

All equipment is PAT tested and properly rated. We use RCD protection throughout, employ licensed electricians, and follow Mexican electrical safety regulations. Detailed documentation and safety briefings ensure crew awareness.
